How long does it take to get from Liberia airport to Junquillal?
Count on roughly an hour and fifteen to an hour and twenty minutes door to door, without stops. That makes Liberia (LIR) by far the most practical airport for Junquillal. Flying into San José (SJO) is possible, but the drive from there is around four and a half hours, which turns a travel day into a very long one.
Add time for immigration, bags and any stops on the way. For most guests, the realistic answer is that you land, and a little under two hours later your feet are in the sand.
What is the road like, and do you need a 4x4?
The first part of the trip crosses the open plains of Guanacaste on paved highway under wide skies. As you approach the coast the roads narrow and become more rural, and the final stretch toward Junquillal feels like what it is: a quiet part of the country that has not been paved over for tourism.
In the dry season, roughly December to April, a regular car does the job. In the green season, from May to November, we recommend a 4x4, especially in September and October, the wettest months. Rain here usually falls in the afternoon and evening, so a morning arrival is also a drier one. If you prefer not to think about any of this, the concierge can arrange private transport with a driver who knows the route.
Should you stop for groceries on the way?
This is the question that matters most on the first evening. Junquillal village, five minutes from the villas, has a basic grocery store: good for water, fruit, eggs and a forgotten bottle of wine, not for stocking a week. The nearest full supermarket is in Tamarindo, 30 to 45 minutes away.
You have three sensible options. Ask your driver for a supermarket stop along the route and shop yourself. Send your list to the concierge in advance and arrive to a stocked kitchen, which many families prefer. Or skip the question entirely and book a private chef, who shops locally and cooks in the villa. Junquillal has few restaurants, so for most stays we recommend the chef anyway, at least for the first night.
Why is it better to arrive before dark?
Night falls early in the tropics, and quickly. Rural roads here have little lighting, the last kilometers are unfamiliar, and animals cross when they please. None of this is dangerous for an attentive driver, but it is not how anyone wants to start a holiday.
There is a softer reason too. Arriving in daylight means walking into the villa, seeing the Pacific from the pool deck, and understanding at once where you are. The first sunset is part of the arrival. If your flight lands late in the afternoon, talk to the concierge about the timing before you book the last leg.
