This guide was written by Luca. Luca Rey has lived in Junquillal since he was ten years old, and as Odisea's on-site concierge, he has coordinated over two hundred excursions for estate guests over the past four years. The recommendations that follow are his — no advertising, no commissions, no references to services he hasn't tried himself.
Surf
Junquillal breaks best at mid-to-low tide. December through April have more consistent swell, but September and October can surprise. For beginners, the best option is lessons at Playa Avellanas (35 min north) — the sandy bottom is more forgiving. For intermediate and advanced surfers, Junquillal itself has perfect days.
Recommended instructor: Luis Rodríguez, who has worked the area for ten years and knows every break. I coordinate directly with him.
Sea Turtles
Leatherback nesting season runs July through December. Night walks are coordinated with TAMAR (ANAI Association / TAMAR), which manages beach surveys. Maximum group size is 8 to minimize impact. A note: turtles are not always present — this is nature, not a show. But when they are, it is one of the most moving experiences in Costa Rica.
Sea Kayak
The estuary south of the beach and the coastline between Junquillal and Playa Lagarto are perfect for kayaking. Departing before dawn, you commonly spot tricolored herons, brown pelicans, and in season (November–January) crocodiles in the mangroves. Equipment is available at the estate — outings coordinated by Luca.
Sport Fishing
The Pacific off Junquillal is good for red snapper, sea bass, and — in season, May to November — mahi-mahi and wahoo. The area's go-to boat is Captain Mario Soto's, based at Playa Lagarto. Half day: $350. Full day: $600. Booking requires minimum 48 hours notice.
Horseback Riding
The horse trail between Junquillal and Playa Lagarto (two hours, round trip) is one of the most beautiful in Guanacaste. There is no other path through that coastal stretch — only the beach and the jungle flanking it. Ranch available 15 minutes from the estate. Children from age 7.
Hiking
Lomas de Barbudal Biological Reserve is 1 hour 20 minutes east. For something closer, the coastal trail between Junquillal and Iguanita (45-minute walk) passes over cliffs and tidal pools. I walk it myself two or three times a week at sunrise — guests who want company, just let me know.
Cultural Visits
Santa Cruz (25 min) has Guanacaste's best market for tropical fruits, local cheeses, and maize tortillas. The Santa Cruz Artisan Women's Association produces the finest corobicí pottery in the region — sold at the market, not in souvenir shops.
For a deeper experience, Guanacaste's Archaeological Museum in Liberia (1h20) holds pre-Columbian pieces from the Chorotega region that give full context to the history of this coast.
How to Coordinate
For any activity, message me before you arrive — ideally 3–5 days ahead for half-day or full-day excursions. Turtle watches require at least one week's notice. Surf and kayak can often be arranged the same day if conditions allow.
The goal is for you to arrive at the estate with a program already in place, so logistics don't take up any space during your stay. That's what I'm here for.
